Overview Of Each English Section

All nine of these "English" sections are designed for English Language Learners.Links found under the
other subject areas listed on the Home Page are more appropriate for native English speakers.  This "Teacher's Page" only discusses the part of this website focused on assisting English Language Learners. There are several other smaller parts that have excellent resources more appropriate to native English speakers or very advanced English Language Learners.  Those parts are accessible through the "
Home " page of this site.

MORE DETAILS ABOUT EACH ENGLISH SECTION:

The Beginner section is divided into various categories.  This section, like all the English sections, is designed for people who are learning English as a Second Language.  This section, again, like almost all the other English sections, has a "Table of Contents" at the top listing various categories.  Almost all of the links in this section have both audio and text, and are designed for very beginning learners.   This section is also suitable for young English-speaking children who are just learning to read. A few of the links listed under the "Health" category, though, might not be suitable for very young children. All the links in this section, as they are in the other ones, are designed for easy self-access by beginning English learners.

The English Themes for Beginners/Early Intermediate  section is mainly divided into the specific themes that I generally teach in my Beginners English class.  Ninety percent of the links in this section have both audio and text.  Many of the links in the Beginner section can also be found here, but they are categorized differently.  I also have a "Favorites" category here that lists the top twenty or thirty links that I believe are the most effective online tools to help people learn English. This entire section also would be suitable for young children. There is also a small "Math" section on this page which includes several excellent sites that have audio and animated math glossaries. A small number of categories, including ones on "Citizenship," "California" and "Immigration" also have links that are more geared towards intermediate English learners.  I use these for a Government class and have not gotten around to creating a separate Government page yet.

The Bilingual Exercises section consists primarily of links that are specifically designed to teach English to native speakers of other specific languages.  For example, there are several sites that have been developed to teach English to Spanish-speakers.  Many, though not all, of these sites provide both audio and text.

The Intermediate & Advanced section is appropriate for, as the title says, intermediate and advanced learners of English, as well as native speakers (it has a category for SAT preparation).  It has many English-learning games.  Very few of the links in this section have audio. This section will be re-organized in 2007 to more specifically support an Intermediate English class I anticipate teaching next school year.

The English Themes for Intermediate/Advanced section is divided into categories that we primarily use in our Intermediate English classes.  The two major areas are links to support the units we use in teaching units provided by The Write Institute (an exceptional program for teaching writing to English learners) and to support the units in the Visions textbooks (this site, however, has no official connection to either The Write Institute or to Visions) .  Very few of these links have audio.

The Examples of Student Work section takes advantage of the latest advertising craze called "viral marketing" and "user generated content" to provide our students with easy ways to create materials online that can be shared with their families and friends -- and help them develop their English skills. Teachers can easily have their students use these links and have them email their finished products to them.  Teachers, in turn, can then post links to those products on their own website. You might want to read an article I've written about these applications.

The Science section is the only one that does not have a "Table of Contents" at the top of the page.  This section has a list of links, almost all which have both audio and text, that are science-related. Most of these links are also located in other sections under different categories.

The Geography & United States History section is organized to support each chapter of the World Views geography textbook and the America's Story United States History textbook I use in my classes (this site, however, has no official connection to either textbook).  Both of these textbooks are written for English Language Learners.  Most of the links in this section provide both audio and text.  In this section the links in italics provide audio and text. The links in regular print either do not have audio, or they have audio but no captions.

TheWorld History section is designed to support a new class I'm teaching English Language Learners this year. It is organized to support each chapter of the Short Lessons in World History textbook that I will be using (this site, however, has no official connection to the textbook). Many of the links here provide both audio and text.  In this section the links in italics provide audio and text.  The links in regular print either do not have audio, or they have audio but no captions.  Some of the links on this page lead to sections on the "Geography & United States History" page because there is obviously some overlap between U.S. History and Word History.  Most of the links on this World History page, however, are indeed new links..

The Best Websites provide student self-access links to the resources I highlight in many of my Websites Of The Year .

Please contact me at MrFerlazzo@aol.com if you find links that are not working or links
that you think are inappropriate. Also contact me if you have suggestions on how I can make
this site better!
